GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Every child at a South Carolina school beset with poverty has received a new pair of shoes as an early Christmas gift.
WYFF-TV reports 360 students at Alexander Elementary School in Greenville received a pair of new, donated New Balance sneakers.
Principal Leda Young said NewSpring Church leaders contacted her about a month ago, wanting to do something special for her students. Shoe sizes were then checked, and permission slips went home.
Young called Wednesday a very emotional day for students and staff.
With the help of a sporting goods store, the church also donated two bicycles for each class. Students with the best behavior and attendance will win the bicycles.
State education records show that nearly all the school's students live in poverty.
