Two Horry County police officers are under an internal investigation over allegations they billed the county for hours they didn't work.
The department had no official comment Monday night, but NewsChannel 15 learned officers David Rexroad and Wesley Harris are suspended.
Horry County Councilman Bob Grabowski, Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said Prestwick Subdivision contracted with the county to have officers patrol in their off-time.
Grabowski said the pair billed thousands of dollars to the county, but didn't put in the hours.
The county sends invoices to Prestwick's Property Owner's Association, but the POA's president said Monday that the contract was for nowhere near "thousands of dollars."
"It's a (heck) of a lot less than that," said the president, Don Kobs.
Kobs said he didn't know what was going on with the investigation, but that he had seen officers patrolling the area.
"We were having problems with speeding," Kobs said who added the extra patrols began in May.
Kobs said if the POA did pay for services they didn't receive, "We'll certainly go after the county."
Grabowski said the police department was tipped off internally and began the investigation. He said the officers' automated vehicle locator system proved the officers weren't patrolling the areas when they said they were.
Police Chief Johnny Morgan is expected to release more information Tuesday.
When asked if charges were pending, Horry County Deputy Solicitor Fran Humphries said he couldn't comment other than to say his office had been made aware of the case.
