CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show that 17 percent of South Carolinians have no health insurance.
The Charleston Post and Courier reported Wednesday that for cities of 65,000 or more, North Charleston had the highest percentage of uninsured. More than 25 percent of North Charleston residents lack health coverage.
Mount Pleasant had the lowest percentage of uninsured - just over 6 percent.
The numbers are based on surveys last year.
Texas led the nation in the percentage of uninsured with more than 24 percent of its population having no health insurance.
Massachusetts was doing best with just over 4 percent lacking health coverage.
