South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-car crash that killed an 18-year-old woman from Surfside Beach Thursday evening.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler says Cynthia Ayala died from mass trauma to vital organs.

It happened on 17 Business in front of Old Time Pottery in Surfside Beach around 5:40 p.m. just south of Highway 544.

According to Highway Patrol, Derek Fiore, 34, from Rutherford, New Jersey, was traveling north on a frontage road that runs parallel to Highway 17. Troopers say for some unknown reason, he crossed the median onto Highway 17 Business and slammed into the five other cars, which were stopped for a light.

Ayala was in one of the cars sitting at the light.

One person was airlifted from the wreck. That person's condition has not been released.
