A 19-year-old Russian exchange student was killed when the bicycle she was riding on was hit by a van Thursday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.

It happened just before 2 p.m. at 16th Avenue North and Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes says the girl who died was riding in the basket of the bike. The male student who was operating the bike is also a Russian exchange student. He had only minor injuries.

Knipes says according to witnesses at the scene, the van was at the traffic light at 16th Avenue and began to move through the intersection when the light turned green and the bicycle pulled out in front of him.

The driver of the van is not being charged, but the incident is still under investigation.

Capt. Knipes says he doesn't believe drugs or alcohol were involved.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge will release the victim's name once her family is notified.
