Representative Mick Mulvaney, who represents South Carolina's 5th District in Washington, has filed legislation to amend the rules governing pool lifts.

The Americans with Disabilities Act says all public pools larger than 300 feet have to have a permanent pool lift, to help the handicapped get in and out of the pool.

Mulvaney's legislation says a portable lift will do.

Hoteliers say they agree with providing access to all customers, but the lifts are expensive.

"We're so pleased to see the Pool SAFE Act bill filed, and I'm grateful to Rep. Mulvaney for bringing attention to the U.S. Dept. of Justice's revisions to the ADA Act in filing the bill. At our property, we want to be able to provide access to our pools to everyone, but we also want to do so in the safest way possible," said Steve Chapman, general manager of the Island Vista Resort in Myrtle Beach.

Mulvaney's bill was introduced last week.

You can search for the entire text of the bill online on the Library of Congress' Thomas legislative website by visiting <http://thomas.loc.gov/home/thomas.php>.
