Schools provide most children with breakfast and lunch throughout the week, but many would go hungry over the weekend if it weren't for a local organization called the Backpack Buddies

Backpack Buddies is a non-profit group whose purpose is to provide children with basic necessities and more.

Every week, they deliver food to schools in Horry County. On Friday, the teachers then discreetly place the food in the backpacks of the children who need it.

When backpack buddies started in 2004, 300 children were served. Now, more than 2,000 receive food weekly. This makes donations even more important.

Cindy Taylor volunteers with Backpack Buddies. She says, "Food is our main concern. That is the major part of what we do. We have 2,100 backpacks to fill each week that feeds the children over the weekend."

There are several ways to donate to Backpack Buddies. Vacation Myrtle Beach has taken the initiative to support the program through March and April.

The company matches every donation made their thirteen oceanfront resorts. Vacation Myrtle Beach also wanted to make sure people learned about the program.

The company's marketing director, Matt Klugman, says he feels like they've gotten more people to take notice of exactly what Backpack Buddies does.

You have until the end of April to donate through the Vacation Myrtle Beach match campaign, or you can donate at the Backpack Buddies office in Garden City.
