Erik Karney, the Socastee High School resource officer who was wounded in a school shooting last September, was given the National Award of Valor by the National Association of School Resource Officers Tuesday night.

Erik Karney was injured when he tried to stop a student who shot at him at school.

Karney was in his office with Christian Helms, 15, when police say Helms fired a shot that narrowly missed Karney.

Helms' is charged as an adult on charges of attempted murder, two counts of possession of an incendiary device and two counts of attempted detonation of those devices.

Karney got the award at the NASRO's 21st Annual National Training Conference at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FL.
