The Socastee High School resource officer, wounded in a shooting at the school last September, will be honored next month by the National Association of School Resource Officers.

Erik Karney was injured when he tried to stop a student who shot at him at school.

Karney will receive the award during the NASRO's 21st Annual National Training Conference at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FL on June 28th.

The NASCRO says, "Ofc. Erik Karney from the Horry County Police Department will receive the NASRO National Award of Valor for his actions that occurred on September 21, 2010 at Socastee High School when he was confronted by an armed student who planned to carry out a "Columbine" style attack on the school."

Karney was in his office with Christian Helms, 15, when police say Helms fired a shot that narrowly missed Karney.

Helms is also accused of bringing several pipe bombs to school that day in his backpack.

Helms' name is being released, even though he's a juvenile, because he is being tried as an adult on charges of attempted murder, two counts of possession of an incendiary device and two counts of attempted detonation of those devices.
