A suspect is in custody for the murder of a well-known singer in Hartsville. John Rubin Mitchell, 46, is charged with murder following the death of Chandler Spencer, according to Russell Cox, spokesperson for the City of Hartsville. Mitchell is also charged with grand larceny and petit larceny. Spencer was found dead in his apartment on Washington Street March 4. Police haven't said how he was killed.
Police also recovered a minivan usually driven by the victim, added Cox. Spencer performed with several well-known R & B groups in the 1990's. His stage name was Omar Chandler. His website says he was on the verge of a comeback. We'll have more information as it becomes available.
