Highway Patrol says a man drove his car into the ocean about 1:20 a.m. in Garden City.

They charged Charles Jeffrey Evitt, 37, with Driving Under the Influence.

Evitt did not stop for a stop sign at Woodland Drive and North Waccamaw Drive, troopers say.

He then smashed through a fence leading to the beach entrance and ended up about 30 feet off the shore, leaving debris all over the beach, according to troopers.
