A group of Coastal Carolina University are guaranteed to have a white Christmas as they pack their bags and head to Antarctica for the holidays for a research expedition.

Two science professors and a graduate student will be spending the holidays with five scientists from East Carolina University to study various aspects of groundwater discharge.

Rich Viso, the assistant director of CCU's School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science and, Rick Peterson, a marine science lecturer will spend three weeks on a small island off a peninsula of the southernmost continent.

Leigha Peterson will be there for ten weeks.

"When I went home for Thanksgiving, we did like a little Christmas since I'll be gone for all of that. I got more thermal underwear than I could probably ever wear in a lifetime, or so I thought, before this trip," Peterson said.

The trip is funded by a National Science Foundation grant.
