Midway Fire Rescue Department celebrated 50 years in service Sunday.

The department serves Pawleys Island, the Litchfield Community community and parts of Georgetown.

The department started in 1962 with one fire station as an all-volunteer program.

Midway now has 64 full time employees and almost 20 volunteers.

They held a service Sunday, in which several Georgetown County Council members spoke and a video played with pictures from the last 50 years.

Former chief Mike Mock spoke as well.

"It means a lot to me that the community is better protected and have the services that they need and deserve to have," said Mock.
