NewsChannel 15 received emails and phone calls Friday concerning a rumor that Santee Cooper crews went to New York to assist in the cleanup after Hurricane Sandy, but were turned away because they are not unionized.
Mollie Gore with Santee Cooper says those rumors are not true. The power company received requests from New York and New Jersey for assistance. Gore says their crews went to coastal New Jersey to assist Jersey Central Power and Light.
Santee Cooper sent 27 line technicians and 16 fleet vehicles to help. Gore says they are from Conway, Myrtle Beach and Garden City. They arrived Thursday.
"They'll be there as long as they're needed or until they are needed here," adds Gore.
Santee Cooper joins several other agencies from across the country helping to restore power to areas hit by Hurricane Sandy earlier this week.
