A one-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a boat accident in Georgetown County is improving.

Wednesday night, a boat capsized in the Waccamaw River as six people tried to make their way home to Sandy Island.

Rescuers searched the river for 30 hours before everyone was accounted for.

Three drowned and three survived, including two children. One was a one-year-old boy named Zyair Smalls, who was found floating in the water.

He was air-lifted to MUSC in Charleston in critical condition.

DNR reports his father says the boy's condition is improving.

DNR is still investigating why the boat capsized. Witnesses report the boat took water over bow and then sank.

DNR hasn't yet found the boat, but divers will continue searching for it in the near future.
