A Myrtle Beach company responsible for polluting neighborhood groundwater around its 17th Avenue South manufacturing facility is considering demolishing the building, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

This week, DHEC proposed a plan for AVX Corp., which makes parts for electronics equipment, to remove the degreaser trichloroethylene, or TCE, from the neighborhood's groundwater. However, the possible demolition of the facility may delay the plan.

DHEC has divided the cleanup plan, designed to reduce the levels of TCE to standard drinking water levels within 15 years, into two phases. The first is the neighborhood near AVX, the second is the AVX property.

Work could begin as early as next fall.
