Over the past week, eleven people have died in car accidents around South Carolina including five on the Grand Strand.

All of the deadly crashes fall during what the South Carolina Department of Public Safety calls the 100 Deadly Days of Summer.

"This is not uncommon to see a rash of fatalities during our summer months," said South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Sonny Collins.

Highway Patrol statistics show this year's Deadly Days are on par with recent years.

As of July 17th of this year, we've had 97 fatal accidents. At this point in 2011, there were 101... 96 in 2010.

"You may be the safest driver out there but we do share the road with people that are not so safe," said Collins. "So we have to make sure we do everything we can do which includes protecting your self every time you leave home."

Those warnings are a constant reminder to Conway resident Debra Norris.

"Some days it feels like it was just yesterday," said Norris. "I knew something wasn't right. So I went inside and got her father, and he came back in and told me that she didn't make it. She died on impact."

Five years ago while driving on Highway 501 in Conway, Debra's 18-year-old daughter, Desiree, was killed in a car crash, and it's those memories that still haunt her.

"We'll see something or hear a song, and it will spark memories and I will just cry for no reason," said Norris.

Desiree's August 28th, 2007, wreck is a painful reminder of the 100 Deadly Days

Debra preaches safety along with patience to warn others.

"Roads are going to be backed up," said Norris. "You're just going to have to take your time and not be in a hurry."

The 100 Deadly Days start around Memorial Day and last until Labor Day.
