Delta Air Lines announced Friday new, weekly nonstop service between Myrtle Beach and LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Flights start this weekend and will operate on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Residents of South Carolina will now have convenient service to New York, and they can make connections to other Northern cities as well," said Gail Grimmett, Delta's senior vice president-New York, in a press release. "We also expect many New Yorkers to spend their vacations at a popular leisure destination such as Myrtle Beach."

The new Myrtle Beach service is part of Delta's expansion in New York, with the addition of 100 new daily flights and 26 new destinations in spring and summer 2012.

Delta is investing $160 million to modernize two terminals at LaGuardia, which includes the construction of a new walkway connecting the facilities.
