(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's veto of fee increases for civil court filings has survived an override vote in the House.
The 58-51 vote on Thursday fell short of the two-thirds needed to override the veto of a bill that generates more than $21 million for the state's court system.
State Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal says Sanford's veto is like a torpedo that will sink the state's courts. She says without the money she'll be forced to lay off court reporters and clerks who do legal work for judges.
Sanford and other opponnents said the measure would make it too expensive for some to take issues to court.
Supporters said without the money people with have a harrder time getting issues through court at all.
