St. John's Elementary and Brunson-Dargan Elementary schools were locked down for a brief time Tuesday, after a report of a man carrying what appeared to be a gun near St. John's Elementary.

Police are now saying that a 14-year-old was carrying a shot gun case in the area.

The teen has been charged with Burglary because Darlington police say he broke into a home on Spring Street and stole the gun case.

The teen was released to his parents.

Spokeswoman for the Darlington County School District, Audrey Childers, said the schools did "an exceptional job of mobilizing and implementing their safety plans."

She also commended the Darlington Police Department for responding so quickly to the threat.

The school day continued as normal after the lockdown was lifted.
