The City of Florence is close to taking over Timmonsville water and sewer services, according to Florence City Manager Drew Griffin.

In late August, WPDE NewsChannel 15 reported that Timmonsville was buying water from Florence after a problem with one of its water tanks.

At the time, Griffin stated that Florence had a single water line connection off of I-95 near the Honda Plant in Timmonsville.

Griffin says they talked about a receivership with the town where it would regain control of its water and sewer services after a period of time, but now Florence is looking to get permanent control.

He says the biggest hurdle to the takeover is a $5.5 million dollars loan the Town of Timmonsville has with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Griffin says the town took out the loan in 2006 for repairs to its water system.

He says the City of Florence will assume the loan if the takeover goes through, but they're working with USDA to restructure the loan to an acceptable amount.

Griffin says they will know more information on the restructuring in two to six weeks.

About 1,000 people receive water and sewer services from the Town of Timmonsville.
