Around noon Saturday, police responded to a domestic situation on Gallant Court off Holmestown Road in Horry County, according to Sgt. Donald with the Horry County Police Department.

Horry County police were escorting a woman to pick up some personal property at the home.

When Gary Kenneth Stegall, 64, finally let the woman in to get clothes and some personal items, he started heading to the door with a shotgun pointed at the officer, according to the police report.

The officer went to her car to call for back up. When she did, Stegall slashed one of the woman's tires, the report says.

The officer then pointed her gun at Stegall and fired three or four shots before her service weapon jammed.

Stegall walked over and hit the officer several times in the face, on the left side, on her left ear and along her jaw line, and the officer dropped her gun.

The officer fought with Stegall for his gun and actually hit him with it.

The man then picked up the officer's gun and went into the house, according to the report.

More officers then started to arrive.

After an hour, the man came out of the house and surrendered to police and was arrested.

Neighbor Jamie Fulper said she heard the shots fired and saw the standoff through her sliding glass door.

She said she and her neighbors were told to stay inside their homes during the standoff.

"He just came out the front door looking straight ahead, walked down the steps, laid on the ground," said Fulper.

Sgt. Robert Kegler said the State Law Enforcement Division will be assisting with the investigation because of the shots fired.

The left side of the officer's face was red and swollen and she had a cut inside of her mouth, but she turned down an offer to take her to the hospital.
