Whitney Daniel, 48, was arrested Thursday by the U.S. Marshals, Florence Police Department and Florence County Sheriff's Office in the 600 block of King Avenue in Florence for failing to register as a sex offender.

U.S. Marshals began investigating Daniel after the Florence Police Department and Florence County Sheriff's Office received tips from the public that Daniel was an unregistered sex offender residing in Florence.

Daniel was convicted of oral copulation of a minor in California in December 2003.

This offense occurred while Daniel was the coach of a women's basketball team. This conviction requires Daniel to register as a sex offender with authorities in the area where he resides.

As part of an overall effort to combat child exploitation, the U.S. Marshals target sex offenders who knowingly fail to comply with their sex offender registration requirements.

The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act is part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. The Adam Walsh Act also provides for the use of federal law enforcement resources, including the U.S. Marshals, to assist the states in locating and apprehending non-compliant sex offenders.

"Mr. Daniel tried to hide his past by moving across the country, but could not hide from the efforts of the public and law enforcement. The law is the law. If you are a convicted sex offender, you must register…simple as that," Kelvin Washington, U.S. Marshal for South Carolina stated.
