Horry County Police precincts will be realigned on March 1.
The police department says the change is needed to distribute call volume more evenly between the precincts, lowering response times.
The South Precinct now handles between 40 and 50 percent of the overall call volume at any given time.
Some areas that were previously in one precinct will now be assigned to a different precinct. You can see the new precinct boundaries in the attached maps.
"One of my goals is to provide more efficient service to the community, which in turn will allow the officers in some of the areas more time to actually follow up on some of the crimes that are occurring in their assigned areas. Right now, many of the officers only have time to respond to a call, take a report and move on to the next call for service; hopefully this realignment of service areas will spread the call volume enough to allow for those follow-ups," Chief Saundra Rhodes said in a press release. "The detectives tend to solve the major crimes such as homicide or armed robberies; however the type of crimes that affect our citizens the most are the low level property crimes that typically don't meet the requirements to be assigned to a detective."
