South Carolina Highway Patrol has identified both of the drivers involved in a hit and run that killed the Kingstree High School girls' basketball coach, according to Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson, but they're not releasing the information just yet.

A car pulled out of a gas station and headed north in the southbound lane of Highway 52, and Sonya Burgess, traveling in that lane, swerved to avoid a head-on collision, troopers say.

Burgess then overcorrected and flipped the 1999 Ford Expedition near Cades Crossroads just after 6:30 p.m. Monday.

She was able to get out of the SUV and was on the road when a second vehicle hit Burgess and killed her, according to Highway Patrol.

Trooper say both drivers continued driving.

The driver believed to have hit Burgess turned herself in for questioning Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Johnson said.

Tuesday, Highway Patrol released a picture of the woman believed to have caused the initial wreck where Burgess had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. She has also been questioned.

At this point, Sheriff Johnson says, no charges have been filed.

Highway Patrol is expected to release information on the investigation Wednesday afternoon.
