A group of volunteers met in Georgetown County Thursday, for a training session, before they spread out across the state to count the homeless people.

The count is done every two years, with volunteers going to shelters, service agencies, under bridges and other places where homeless people can be found.

Organizers say the count is important for setting the amount of government funding to help the homeless.

"HUD funds are based on these counts and the needs that you can demonstrate, so you have to document that there are these needs around," said Al Teague with Eastern Carolina Homelessness.

Teague adds Horry County has the highest per capita homeless rate in the state and Georgetown County is above average.

The count is being coordinated by the South Carolina Homeless Coalition.
