Today marks the 6th straight day temperatures have cracked 70° in our area, and some of that warmth has even broken records, but parts of South Carolina could see snow in just a matter of days.

Right now, most of the United States west of the Appalachian mountains is in deep freeze.

Temperatures feel below the freezing mark as far south as the gulf coast of Louisiana and Texas and into northern Mexico. Normally sunny and mild Los Angeles had their coldest temperature in 22 years, reaching 33° this morning.

A chunk of that arctic air will slowly move in later this week, but it won't be nearly as cold as it is now. Expect much cooler air to arrive Thursday then cold for Friday.

During the transition toward colder temperatures, a storm system will race across the southern half of the country. The models project a chance of snow over western SC and central & northern NC, roughly north of a line from Fayetteville, NC to Charlotte, NC to Greenville, SC Thursday night and early Friday.

This system is fast moving so will not produce a lot of snow, but a few inches is not out of the questions.

Along the Grand Strand and in the Pee Dee, the air near and just above the surface will be above the freezing mark so any precipitation will likely be in the form of rain.

We are still 3 days away from a potentially wintry scenario unfolding across parts of the Carolinas so there are more questions than answers right now. We'll fine tune the forecast through the week.
