(AP) -- CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson University is holding a grand opening for its first-ever campus center devoted to helping military veterans succeed as students.

Dr. Ken Weaver, faculty adviser for the veterans group, says Friday's opening marks a journey that began when students formed a veterans support group in 2006.

Weaver says the new center will be open five days a week and be staffed by veteran-students acting as volunteers.

The center is expected to provide support to veterans as they learn to navigate academics at the university, as well as the ins and outs of assistance programs such as the GI Bill, which helps pay for tuition.

Weaver says there are about 200 students identified as military veterans on the Clemson campus.
