Georgetown County Council was set to have second reading December 11 on an ordinance that could allow a big box store to locate in Pawleys Island, but that reading has been delayed at the request of the developer, Sunbelt Ventures.

The property Sunbelt is interested in developing is Pawleys Island Plaza on Petigru Drive and Highway 17.

In a letter requesting the second reading be deferred, Sunbelt Ventures said it has decided to eliminate the originally proposed 119,500 square foot building and revise the site plan to comply with the Waccamaw Neck Commercial Corridor Overlay Zone.

The company says it reached the decision after meeting with citizen groups and community stakeholders. The letter does not say what size building the company is now considering.

The second reading will now take place at the council's January 8 meeting.

People opposed to the ordinance, and the possibility of a big box store, say it would hurt local shops.

In 2005, residents successfully fought off a Lowe's Home Improvement store.
