The Powerball jackpot is at an all-time record $550 million, which means cashiers are selling tickets at an all-time rapid rate.

"When it's $100 million, nobody excited. $200 million nobody excited. $500 million they all excited," said SunMart cashier Sharon Lawlor.

The store she works at on Fantasy Harbour Blvd. in Horry County was busy with customers throughout the day.

Powerball officials estimate that on Wednesday they sold more than 105,000 tickets every minute before the drawing just before 11 p.m.

The odds of winning the jackpot is one in 175 million but every other person who came into Lawlor's store wanted their shot.

"They knows about it," she said. "They came for their winning ticket. We just encourage them to buy more."

In her eight years working at the store, she said she's never seen a frenzy like this.

"If you don't buy a ticket, you can't win it," said a man buying his tickets. Lawlor quickly agreed.

"They'll spend the last dollar in their pocket just to get one," said potato chip delivery man Benjy Cook. He was in and out of stores all day.

"People have been up there since six this morning getting ungodly amounts," said Cook.

That chance of striking it rich keeps people dreaming for a more luxurious life. Even Lawlor who never bought a ticket in her life bought three.

"Money changes a lot of people life," she said. "Did you know that?"

The "thought" of winning big changes people, Lawlor added.

"This older man, he came in here today. He was like ok if I win, you just run off with me," she said. But when asked if she would you run away with him, Sharon quickly replied no and laughed.

Since the powerball started, only six South Carolinians have won the jackpot.

This is the second-highest jackpot in US lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.
