South Carolina voters turned out Tuesday in large numbers across the state.

Initial reports from precincts indicated voter turnout was likely to be on-par with the record-breaking 2008 General Election, according to a news release from the Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire.

However, unofficial results show voter turnout across South Carolina at 64.34%.

1,849,879 ballots were cast as of 3:00 Wednesday morning.

Voters returned approximately 400,000 absentee ballots this year, surpassing the 2008 record of 342,000 absentee ballots.

In 2008, total voter turnout was a record-setting 76 percent.
