Christian Helms was sentences in 2011 to six years for attempted murder.
The mother of the student who shot at a school resource officer at Socastee High School two years ago today is thanking that officer for saving her son's life.
Traci Helms, Christian Helms' mother, wrote a letter to the editor that appears on The Sun News website.
Christian Helms was 14-years-old when he shot at School Resource Officer Erik Karney. The bullet slammed into Karney's office door. Karney managed to overpower Helms, who revealed in a video and journal that he had planned a Columbine-style attack.
In the letter to the editor, Traci Helms says, "I write this letter, not to open old wounds, but to thank Officer Karney again for his integrity, honor and bravery that day. I could never thank him enough. He saved my son's life when he least deserved it or wanted it."
Helms was sentenced to six years last August for attempted murder, followed by four years probation. Helms will stay in juvenile detention until he's 17-years-old. He'll then be moved to prison.
