Highway Patrol says August broke records for the lowest number of traffic deaths on state highways.
45 people died last month, 17 fewer than in August 2011, which is the lowest number of deaths since August 1975 and 10 percent lower than the previous four-year average.
The state attributes the drop to road and intersection improvements, police, and drivers who buckle up and drive defensively.
"SC DOT engineers are maximizing the resources available to them to improve the safety of roads and intersections that need improvements. We also commend the efforts of the state and local law enforcement agencies that are stepping up their efforts to crack down on violators," said Secretary of Transportation Robert Onge.
