Investigators with the Florence County Sheriff's Office are warning Florence County residents of a recent telephone scam, demanding money in exchange for the dismissal of collection actions or the satisfaction of overdue accounts.

The sheriff's office is investigating a report that a telephone caller falsely claimed to be affiliated with a law firm, demanding that the victim send money to satisfy the overdue accounts of an adult child, or else they would prosecute and jail the child.

The caller instructed the victim to transfer the funds to a pre-loaded credit card and send them to the caller, which was done.

Oftentimes, these scammers ask for personal information such as a date of birth, social security number or banking information in order to steal identity and money.
