Robeson County officials are gearing up to celebrate the county's 225th birthday.
It was formed in 1787 and named in honor of Colonel Thomas Robeson.
The county is the the largest in North Carolina in terms of square footage with a population of about 140,000 residents.
"We're a very diverse county. A tri-racial county for the most part. Lumbee Indians, the White population as well as the Black population. We have several tribes here in Robeson County," said Raymond Cummings Robeson County Commissioner.
The county will celebrate it's birthday with a huge party at the Department of Social Services Complex on 120 Glenn Cowan Road in Lumberton on September 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
"We're excited about the 225th anniversary. We have a lot of rich history here in Robeson County and that's a day that we can highlight the history of our county and show the positive aspects and all the cultural aspects of our county."
The celebration includes free food, entertainment, children rides and activities. Officials from of the county's 29 townships will be on hand to give you a history lesson on how the communities formed.
Our towns will set up tables and go over some of the history of the towns. We'll have some information on the county history," Charles Britt Robeson Assistant County Manager.
Organizers say they're expecting thousands to attend and it will a lot fun for everyone who comes out.
