Laurinburg police arrested Lucio Vazquez Valdez, 53, for severely beating his girlfriend.
They say Judith Patel, 63, was being loaded into an ambulance when they arrived at her home on McRae Street about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
She was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital, and then flown by helicopter to another facility because of the severity of her injuries.
Police charged Valdez with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.
Valdez was given no bond and placed in Scotland County Jail.
