CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WPDE) - The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has joined the Democrats, protesters, and observers in Charlotte, North Carolina for the Democratic National Convention.
The chamber arranged for artists to create a sand sculpture featuring President Barack Obama. The 15.5 ton sculpture is made from South Carolina sand and located just outside the EpiCentre in downtown Charlotte. It took five artists from Florida based group "Team Sandtastic" three days to complete the sculpture. Obama is wearing a button that says "Vote Myrtle Beach."
The sculpture has received a lot of attention. Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and his family stopped by to have their photo taken with the sculpture Saturday.
According to a MBACC statement, in 2011 alone, over 1.3 million visitors from the city flocked to the Myrtle Beach area, and Myrtle Beach area tourism officials say the sculpture is a great way to put the destination on display while thousands of people are in town for the DNC.
