Surfside Town Council approved plans Friday to upgrade the town's pier.
Council members toured the pier with the town engineer, and they then voted to move forward on a plan that would add an awning and a door to the front right side of the pier.
They're also adding a 6-foot wide ramp in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
"Bringing the ramp into ADA compliance will give all people better access to the pier and it's going to move some of the obstructions," said Steve Strickland, the town engineer.
The permitting process is supposed to last until December and Strickland hopes to start construction in January.
