Students at Timmonsville High School in Florence School District Four addressed their disapproval of a new school dress code during a special assembly, Wednesday morning.

The teens were upset that they couldn't wear shirts without a collar to school.

Several students say they weren't allowed in class Monday and Tuesday because their shirts didn't have collars.

Their parents complained and there was a temporary change.

School administrators re-worked the school's policy for the time being allowing students to wear shirts without collars, pending the outcome of the special assembly.

During the assembly, the students presented their case to their principal and superintendent.

They argued their parents purchased school clothes several weeks ago, during the tax-free weekend.

The students say with the way the economy is their parents didn't have the extra money to purchase collared shirts.

According to officials with the South Carolina Department of Education Florence School District Four's poverty level is 93.97%. It ranks 11th out of 85 districts in terms of poverty stricken districts.

District officials sided with the students and have changed the dress code to include non-collared shirts.

However, students aren't allowed to wear plain white t-shirts.
