AYNOR -- It was standing room only inside Aynor Town Hall Tuesday morning as rain forced the grand opening of the Aynor Overpass indoors.
The overpass is dedicated to Julius H. Goodson. Goodson was a longtime resident of Aynor. He was mayor pro-tem while serving on town council from 1970 to 1978, as well as being a WWII veteran.
Signs and plaques were presented to Goodson's family.
The Aynor Overpass connects the two sides of the town, which is divided by Highway 501 in Horry County, and runs 2.5 miles from Highway 319 to Jordanville Road.
The main part of the overpass includes a landscaped median and a multi-use path for the citizens of Aynor.
In addition to the overpass itself, the project included improvements at six intersections to 501 to enhance traffic flow, ease the commute between the two halves of Aynor, and increase safety.
The project was originally estimated to cost $46 million, but came in way under budget at $17.2 million.
