Todd Akin, a Missouri Congressman and Senate hopeful, made a comment on a St. Louis talk show that put his name on the map.
Todd Akin said, "It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to
shut that whole thing down."
NewsChannel 15 asked Dr. Kenneth Thompson, an OB-GYN with Conway Physicians Group, to say whether he thought Akin's statement was true or not.
"I read the statement, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense," said Dr. Thompson. "The woman's body cannot tell the difference whether sex was consensual or not consensual."
Akin released a statement on his website saying, "It's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year."
Dr. Thompson says the damage is already done.
"Are we going to say if you get pregnant, it's not a legitimate rape? You faked it?" said Dr. Thompson. "The statement not only doesn't make sense, it is a dangerous statement to have out there"
President Barack Obama commented on Akin's statement and said, "The views expressed were offensive."
Mitt Romney also said the statement was "inexcusable."
