CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A reserve officer with the state Department of Natural Resources is charged in a hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist on a James Island road.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Jeffery Thomas of Mount Pleasant is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Investigators believe he was driving the Ford Explorer that struck Matthew Denton's bicycle about Friday night. The 40-year-old James Island resident died at the scene.
A release says Thomas stopped and checked on the bicyclist, got back into his vehicle and drove away, then returned half an hour later.
Thomas' bond was set Saturday at $20,000.
DNR Lt. Robert McCullough says Thomas volunteers as a deputy law enforcement officer with the agency. He won't work while the charge is pending.
