An expected increase in traffic has prompted state transportation officials to put up traffic lights near Lucy T. Davis Elementary School in Florence.
Three sets of lights are at the intersection of Hoffmeyer Road and Westfield Drive at the entrance of the school.
Hoffmeyer Road is already busy with a few housing developments, businesses and churches.
Officials with the State Department of Transportation estimate 14,000 cars travel that road everyday.
District leaders say they didn't want to take any chances with the safety of students or cause traffic congestion.
Lucy T. Davis Elementary is the first school built in Florence School District One since the mid 1990's.
The school's namesake spent many years in education and served as a principal, school board member and volunteer.
