South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis is giving some taxpayers some of their money back through the Palmetto Payback program.

It returns unclaimed money in things like stocks, bonds and life insurance policies to people who lost or forgot about them.

Loftis stopped at Bazen's Family Restaurant in Florence and at the Grand Strand Senior Center in Myrtle Beach to explain the program to people. His staff helped residents research to see if they have any unclaimed funds.

"This is an old program for the state. We've got 300 million dollars of taxpayer money and so what we've got to do is a figure out a away to get it back. You know we've got to be more efficient," explained Loftis.

Will Willis of Florence found out he had at least $100 dollars waiting for him.

"My sister looked online. She checked it for me and she noticed that I had some unclaimed money. I looked into it and I just never followed up on it. I just read in the paper today that they were going to be at the Bazen's and I decided to come up here and check it, " said Willis.

About 50 people came out to the Florence location and at least three of them learned they had unclaimed money.

The property transferred to the Program for safekeeping is held indefinitely for the benefit of the rightful owners.

Loftis says if the state is holding property for you, you always have the right to claim your property any time at no cost. The funds are used for the good of all South Carolina citizens, until claimed.
