OLANTA -- Olanta mayor Jimmy McCutcheon says his town has paid off nearly $265,000 in debt.
The town owed money to the State of South Carolina, Florence County, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and vendors.
McCutcheon says when he was elected in December of 2009, the town was struggling to pay off its debt then.
He adds they monitored expenses and reduced hours at the Olanta Hall from five to three days a week to save money.
The town clerk's position was made part-time, but McCutcheon adds they didn't raise taxes or cut any jobs.
Olanta's annual budget is about $800,000 and it employs three full-time and two part-time workers.
McCutcheon says they're looking forward and setting the stage for a brighter future.
The town is planning a big celebration for their debt free accomplishment on Main Street Saturday beginning at 5:35 p.m.
The town is asking residents to come out and take part in the fun.
