A money scam that has been going on for several years internationally has re-surfaced in Horry County.
Residents may receive a letter in the mail indicating they've won a large sum of money in a lottery in the United Kingdom.
Included in the letter is a check for $4,990 dollars to be used to help pay government taxes on the winnings.
Recipients are then instructed to cash the check and Moneygram the tax amount ($3,495) to an overseas account to get the rest of the money.
Once the check has been cashed and the money is sent, the check bounces. It is determined that the check is a fake, and the victims, along with their bank institution, are out the money.
If you receive a letter like this, do not cash the check.
A check with the International Claim Department has identified the scammers as being of an unknown origin and location.
If you believe you have become a victim of this or any other scam, you are urged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
