Marques Brown, 27, had a small child in a car seat in his vehicle when Brown shot and killed Master Patrol Officer Jeremiah Goodson, according to Captain Johnny Barnes with the Lumberton Police Department.
Brown was arraigned just after 10 a.m. Wednesday via video conferencing from the Cumberland County Detention Center, where he is being held. The bond hearing and his arraignment were held at the same time, and Brown was denied bond.
Officer Goodson was off-duty when he spotted Brown, who was wanted by Lumberton police, at the Express Depo/Dairy Queen on Fayetteville Road.
Brown had warrants in Lumberton for failure to appear in court on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon. He also has warrants in Columbus County, North Carolina for receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.
Goodson and another officer approached Brown's car and that's when Brown started firing from inside the vehicle, according to Capt. Barnes.
Goodson was hit more than once and died a couple of hours later at the hospital.
The other officer was able to arrest Brown.
Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill says Goodson's death has taken a toll on him. He says Goodson was a good guy who did his job and was loved by everyone.
Goodson grew up in Lumberton and has been with Lumberton Police for six years. He was assigned as a resource officer at Lumberton High School and also worked in the gang unit.
Chief McNeil says Goodson's wife is expecting their second child and had to be hospitalized Tuesday after learning what happened to her husband. She is currently in stable condition.
