A lot of people try to avoid black cats on days like Friday the 13th but the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society wants you to do just the opposite, take one home.

"We're promoting good luck because you'll have good luck if you take home a cat and make it part of your family," said Executive Director Sandi Kendrick.

She says shelters all over the country are dealing with a large number of cats, especially black ones, needing homes.

Black cats are available for adoption Friday for just $13 and that includes spay or neuter and vaccinations. Usually, they cost $70.

"We just thought that this would be a great opportunity for people who can't afford the normal adoption fee to come in and find a forever friend," Kendrick said.

More than one-third of the 140 cats at the North Myrtle Beach shelter are black.

The shelter is open until 6 p.m. Friday.
