NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Bureau says its plan to increase visitors is off to a good start. At a luncheon Wednesday, members got an update on the "Building North Myrtle Beach" campaign.
The five-year plan includes pledges from the private sector, which have reached $2.4 million. The total is expected to go up to $3 million thanks to a marketing co-op, 18 hotels have agreed to charge a $1 per night fee in addition to standard hotel rates.
"We know that our dollar per room night already is successful. It's already generating more dollars that we thought it would. At least we're projected to generate more than we thought it would," explains Marc Jordan, President of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.
The money raised from visitors will go towards out-of-market advertising.
Jordan adds as more tourists choose North Myrtle Beach for vacation, everyone benefits.
"The more visitors we have come, the more accommodations tax they'll pay, the more sales tax they'll pay the more income they'll generate in our community. Local people are the winners."
The chamber is also creating a volunteer sports ambassador position to help grow their sports tourism market.
