The list of candidates for the 7th Congressional District is long, and it's drawing a majority of the voters out to the polls on Tuesday.

"That's all I've heard seems like for a year is the 7th Congressional District," said Conway Resident Joan Cannon. "We must need it."

There were many races on the ballot, but to many at the precinct Cannon voted, there one that stood out was the newly created seat.

"I think it's very important," said Conway resident Dorothy Sanders.

An increase in the state's population in the 2010 Census meant South Carolina would receive another seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Nine Republicans and four Democrats battled each other in their respective primaries with the hope of representing Grand Strand and Pee Dee voters.

"There are so many things that have arisen that we have not had the proper representation for, and I think it's so important that we do," said Sanders.

"I think it's important that we have somebody there that represents us and knows what the area is all about," said John Hughes of Conway.

"It's historic because the 7th Congressional District which comprises the Pee Dee and the Grand Strand and Georgetown County is an historic region of the state that has traditionally been one congressional district before we were broken up 20 years ago," said Republican State Rep. Alan Clemmons of Horry County.

Clemmons designed the lines that created the area's new seat.

He said this election will give voters a representative who will empathize with their needs.

"Somebody from this area that will understand our infrastructure needs, understand the importance of I-73," he said. "To understand that we are here and what we need here in order to be able to flourish and grow."

If none of the candidates win more than 50 percent of their primary's vote, a runoff will be held on June 26th.

The general election will be held on November 6th.
